It is late sprouting plant. The maturity of its grapes is medium to late. They produce musts that give good red wines, quite alcoholic and of a dark red color.

The clusters are usually of medium dimension, conical, compact and that usually are born from the third yolk.
The berries are spherical, small of intense black color, with a lot of pruina, of thick skin rich in anthocyanins, with a very fleshy pulp, soft, colorless and with little amount of tannins.
Its flavor varies considerably depending on the area, usually wild or wood, with soft touches of blackberry.
Its juice varies from a rough to neutral flavor.
In the very hot years, it is capable of giving wines with a high degree of tannin and with a high level of tannin.
It produces tannic wines that can be high in alcohol, and is more successful in the Rhône-style blends. It has a particular affinity for Garnacha, softening and giving it structure.
